Willys Restoration

Willys vehicles are famous for the role they played in early Americana and in WWII. Today, these flat-fendered Jeeps and antique cars are a favorite among collectors and are commonly restored to their original condition for show and collector enjoyment.

Original colors

There were a limited number of color combinations used on original Willys cars, trucks and Jeeps. To fully restore a car, the owner must first determine the color palate that was used in the original vehicle, and restore the interior and exterior with that in mind. Color combinations included both military and civilian options.

Model differences

Determine the year and model of the Willys vehicle that you plan to restore. Each year and model is slightly different. Websites and books dedicated to historical or collectible vehicles outline the differences between the different versions. It is important that the wrong details are not added or a mixed year vehicle is created, and the value deteriorates.

Mechanically repair the vehicle

Mechanically repair the vehicle. Restoring the cosmetic elements of the vehicle is pointless if it does not run. Determine which parts are repairable and which need replacement. Remember that every engine needs spark and fuel to run. If you cannot complete the mechanical work alone, consult a professional.

Restore the vehicle physically

There are two styles of restoration: all-original and fully restored. All-original restorations do not add any aftermarket elements to the vehicle, but rather seek to repair the pieces that are there. This can, in many cases, increase the vehicles value and is considered the best option if the car is in relatively good condition. If the vehicle's interior is in very poor condition, a full restoration in which upholstery and other elements are replaced with new pieces is typically more appropriate.

Restoring a Willys Jeep, car or truck is an excellent shop project if you have a desire to own a classic vehicle or who already have a Willys vehicle that you would like to restore. Restoration is a combination of physical labor and careful research which you should not take lightly.
